The Challenge
Wesley Medical Center is a large metropolitan hospital located in the heart of Wichita, Kansas. The client needed a renovation and expansion of their 1955 structure. The project scope required transforming its general hospital into a modern, vibrant, and welcoming Children’s Hospital, all while meeting a sophisticated and functional program of hospital services.
The Solution
The hospital renovation included the addition of PICU patient rooms, waiting areas, an exterior re-skin, and new signage. Accurate existing plans were unavailable for the 1955 building, so the design team and contractor worked closely together to mitigate any potential negative impacts caused by unknown conditions. Renovation addressed three existing buildings originally constructed between 1920 and 1970. Barge Design Solutions implemented Integrated Project Delivery strategies to solve challenges encountered in older construction. Low floor-to-floor heights also required careful consideration.
The Result
Barge placed a great deal of emphasis on selecting imagery, aesthetic elements, and materials suitable for a young population. Hospital corridors are filled with bright colors, bold patterns, and fun, interactive elements. Each design feature was chosen to foster a stress-free environment for children and families.
Barge also added a new covered drop-off for the main entrance with colorful round bollards. This addition, as well as the brightly illuminated find along the full length of the street-side façade, creates a warm first impression with each welcome.
