The Challenge
Knoxville's central business district is a hub for numerous businesses and hosts various events year-round. The Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) needed to modernize by replacing outdated cast iron water lines beneath the district. This underground space was also congested with utilities and trolley tracks, some dating back to the 1890s, which made minimizing disruptions a key priority. Barge Design Solutions developed a comprehensive plan to replace the wastewater system and improve the natural gas and electric duct bank infrastructure.
The Solution
Barge pulled mapping records, including the original hand-drawn utility notes, to research the previous infrastructure. Designers and surveyors collaborated to lay out and review data for an accurate survey that could be used to design the project. This work enabled a productive installation that minimized utility outages.
The Result
Barge's successful completion of the Knoxville utility infrastructure replacement project demonstrates their ability to address complex infrastructure challenges while minimizing disruptions to the community. Their thorough planning, accurate surveys, and expertise in utility design and installation were instrumental in achieving a positive outcome.
