Nashville International Airport (BNA) Terminal Lobby and International Arrivals Facility (IAF)

The Challenge

Nashville International Airport (BNA) is the fastest-growing airport in the United States, serving over 18 million passengers annually in 2019. With projections exceeding 23 million passengers within five years, BNA developed the comprehensive $1.4 billion BNA Vision plan, set to complete in 2023. This plan includes a new terminal garage, lobby renovation, additional concourse, roadway improvements, and an on-site hotel. To address continued growth, BNA has also created BNA Vision 2.0, a $1.4 billion plan for 2024-2028.

The Solution

Barge Design Solutions is serving as a subcontractor to Hensel Phelps on Project 3, a 440,000-square-foot progressive design-build central terminal and International Arrivals Facility (IAF). Portions of this phased project are under construction, while other parts are in the design phase. The project is expected to be completed in 2023.

The upgraded central terminal will include a new marketplace, a 24-lane security checkpoint (doubling current capacity), ample natural light, and expansive views of the airfield. The IAF will include six new gates and a new U.S. Customs and Border Protection area.

The Result

Barge is responsible for providing the airside civil engineering design services for the IAF, situated between BNA's Concourses B and C. Our scope of work includes the demolition and restoration of the existing aircraft parking apron and trench drains (approximately 7,500 square yards of PCC ramp pavement) in conformance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines.
