The Challenge
Barge Design Solutions was asked to design a new acute care hospital and medical office building. The site for the Oviedo Medical Center (OMC) contained an existing freestanding emergency department (FSED) to be incorporated into the new facility’s design. The client required that the FSED remain open at all times during the construction phase with minimal impact to its operations.
The Solution
The design and construction team collaborated to successfully deliver this project. The mechanical and electrical design was delivered in a design-build manner. Premanufactured components, such as the hospital’s central energy plant, were used to increase quality control of the materials and construction speed.
This project also included the design of a 40,000-SF medical office building connected to the hospital via a covered walkway. Both the hospital and medical office building were under construction at the same time.
The Result
OMC provides full-service healthcare to its community, including diagnostic, surgical, emergency, critical care, and support services. There are 64 patient care beds, including 48 medical/surgical beds, 10 critical care beds, and six labor and delivery recovery suites.
The hospital was designed to expand both vertically and horizontally in the future, which would allow it to double in bed capacity. The center is now LEED certified.
