Planning

The Challenge

After its incorporation, the City of Tucker, Georgia, saw the need to create a strong municipal identity. One way the City hoped to better establish its identity was through the standardization and improvement of the parks and recreation system that it inherited from the County, which had limited maintenance and inconsistent quality.

The Solution

Barge Design Solutions partnered with planners from PROS Consulting and the ETC Institute to prepare the Tucker Recreation and Parks Master Plan. The team conducted inventories of existing parks and recreation assets that were inherited by the city from the county. Barge also engaged with the public and compared existing conditions to national standards. The research ultimately showed a lack of awareness around the existing parks and recreation options, subpar connectivity to/between parks and neighboring areas, and a shortage of Mini Parks, Neighborhood Parks, Community Parks, Sports Complexes, and Special Use Parks.

The Result

The master plan covers the identification of undeveloped land currently owned by the City that would be appropriate for the creation of new parks to meet community needs, as well as the creation of trail networks to connect neighborhoods and parks throughout the City. The plan also includes recommendations on maintenance, programming, park facility improvements, and funding to help Tucker develop and perpetuate a strong and accessible parks and recreation system over the next decade.
